Volunteer — Cycling Double Header Needs You!

A single coordinator position remains unfilled — Start-Finish for MoM (details below). If you're interested, contact Liz Hokanson (contact info below).

We still need volunteers for other jobs too, especially rest stop staff, and SAG drivers.

Wilderness Road Ride and Mountains of Misery would not be possible without the volunteers who come out each year, to mark and sign the courses, marshall the intersections, man the rest stops, prepare the food, drive the SAG vehicles, load and unload the trucks, and supply endless good cheer to hundreds of riders. Of course, we need coordinators to organize all of this too.

Volunteering is fun, which is why over 200 people, and dozens of community groups, come out to do it year after year. It's a great way to meet people and make new friends. Whether you're new in town, looking to meet people, or just looking for something fun to do on Memorial Day weekend, contact us — we'll put you to work!

For community groups, this is a great opportunity for outreach and exposure, and to network with the many other groups that are involved.

Be a Coordinator!

While we always need more "worker bees," we still have some coordinator positions to fill. These jobs require more time committment, and have significant responsibility attached. Coordinators meet at least once a month, January through May, and must be able to work independently between meetings. To sweeten the deal, we're offering an incentive package for coordinators:

  • A $100 gift certificate to Blacksburg Merchants; or free entry for the ride of your choice, plus a gift certificate for the remainder of the $100 value
  • A monogrammed polo shirt
  • Free entry into the event dinner
  • Of course, free pizza at meetings!

Coordinator positions are easier than they might seem. Most of the work is done by groups who have been doing it for years. They just show up and do it, without needing much leadership. Coordinators just keep everything running smoothly. Event day can be a long one, but with plenty of downtime, to relax and enjoy the day.

These Coordinator Positions Are Unfilled

Start-Finish for Mountains of Misery: Confirm arrangements with Newport Rec Center and Mountain Lake Resort. Organize the parking lot and parking lot crew. After the riders have left, you can take a long breather until noon or so. Then drive to Mountain Lake to help set up the finish area. Enjoy the afternoon, relaxing and cheering riders as they finish, but be available to lend a hand. When the last rider finishes, help break down and clean up the finish area (again, plenty of volunteers, who are mostly self-sufficient). Then head back down the mountain to Newport for a final clean-up of the start area. It's a long day but there's plenty of downtime to relax and enjoy yourself.
